In the school she appeared in performances on stage. The musical comedy The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was her Broadway debut. The Crucible revival came out the next year. After starring in the action thriller Spartan (2004) which she also starred in, she was praised for her performance in Gracie's Choice (2004). She then made her Broadway stage debut as Becky Thatcher , the character from the comedy musical The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Then she was cast as a character in the popular teen drama TV series Veronica Mars (2004). Her performance earned her critical acclaim as well as a Saturn Award nomination for Best Actress on television. The 2014 movie the series, she reprised her part as the title character in the new season, she played the title character. While in Veronica Mars, Bell starred in the role of Mary Lane in the musical film Reefer Madness: The Movie Musical (2005) The film was a reprise of the role she played in the New York musical of the same name.Bell played the role of Elle Bishop in the superhero drama series Heroes from 2007 to the year 2008. Bell was the voice of the titular narrator on the show for teens called Gossip Girl. She will reprise the role for the sequel, which will premiere in 2021. Bell was also Showtime comedian House of Lies' lead actress, Jeannie van de Hooven. She starred in the lead role of Eleanor Shellstrop on the critically well-reviewed NBC comedy series The Good Place, receiving a Golden Globe Award nomination for her performance. Bell also portrayed the role of Eleanor Shellstrop in the streaming show The Woman in the Home The Girl in the Window Across the Street Girl in the Window.
