Rauw Alejandro

Despacito was first released by Puerto Rican singer Luis Fonsi in the year 2017 and was the most streamed song within six months. In 2017, the song Despacito, a mixture of pop music with reggaeton, not only brought new focus to reggaeton, but also sparked interest in Latin music. In 2015 there were only two mostly songs with Spanish lyrics on the Billboard Top 100 and in 2016 there were four. At the peak of Despacito's popularity in 2017 however 19 mostly Spanish songs made it into the top 100 as well, and by 2020 there were 41 such songs. Justin Bieber remixed Despacito 2017 as a bilingual rendition. In the following months, several artists collaborated with reggaeton superstars such as Drake and Bad Bunny with MIA (2018), Madonna and Maluma together with Medellin 2019. In the year 2020, a handful of reggaeton artists were expressing displeasure at its inclination towards mainstream but a new generation namely Rauw Alejandro, sought to ensure that reggaeton was evolving. The musician incorporated electronic dance music as well as other styles into his music.
